Father's Day is just around the corner! While many families prepare to fire up the grill or celebrate a special day for the father in their lives, there are other families who will miss the occasion. Father's Day can be a sad time for military families who are separated due to deployment — or families who have lost loved ones in combat.

However, the new on-post program aims to help fathers balance their lives as soldiers and fathers. The Family Advocacy Fathers Initiative is a program designed to promote and recognize responsible fathers in the Fort Jackson community.

"What Our Soldiers Do makes military fathers face more difficult and daunting challenges in their efforts to balance a successful career, stable marriage and strong family bonds," said Greg Lewis, family advocacy program specialist who leads the program. .

The program, sponsored by Community Services, will focus on a father's workshop on Nov. 9 in the Dozier Hall Conference Room.

"Our main goal is to grow and promote fatherhood in the Fort Jackson community," said Lewis, who has previous experience working with the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition. "At the first meeting, we want to introduce the program to the community and ask for ideas," he said.

It may be a coincidence that the Army's birthday and Father's Day fall in the same month but it's no surprise that these three Army officers are following in the footsteps of their officer fathers.
